MiRAD™ measures an individual’s levels of two microRNA, miR-150-5p and miR-23-3p, to quantitatively detect radiation dose with ± 1.0 Gy. miR-23a-3p has demonstrated no significant changes in response to increasing radiation dose exposure enabling its use as an ideal normalization biomarker. miR-150-5p decreases dose-dependently during exposure to increasing radiation, enabling its use as an effective dose-responsive biomarker. Using miR-23a-3p as a normalizer, the MiRAD assay accounts for individual variance in miR-150-5p expression and provides a standardized dose response.

Mononuclear cells in peripheral blood are the major sources of miR-150-5p, while miR-23a-3p is released from the lung as a bound protein and is abundant in circulating peripheral blood.

In preliminary studies, the MiRAD assay has demonstrated effectiveness up to seven days post-radiation exposure. Capture plans to evaluate the effectiveness of the assay in providing absorbed radiation dose estimation from samples taken two weeks post-exposure.
